Edinburgh airport is invariably a poor experience with a remarkable level of avoidable frustrations for the ordinary passenger. Staff try to be helpful and are always polite but there appear to be fundamental systemic problems that are beyond the capability of management to solve. I have been on the point of writing to complain about experiences of Edinburgh airport several times but when one gets home and start to deal with day to day stuff it falls by the way. I could write about the 2 hours it took to check in to a Chicago flight leaving barely enough time to clear security and get to the gate or all the luggage having to be unloaded and reloaded delaying our flight to Schipol jeapordising our connection to Panama (many on our flight did miss connections) or standing in the rain outside immigration on our way home from Copenhagen for 10 minutes having already waited 20 minutes for a set of steps to be found to allow us to disembark, a part of the now typical 75-90 minutes it takes between touching down and leaving the building to get a taxi. I could complain about the 75 minute wait for luggage to start appearing on the carousel between 6.30 and 7.45 am on a Sunday coming home from Newark -long overnight flight. The last two were a pain but more than that there were a lot of visitors to Edinburgh on those flights and quite frankly as a native of the city I was embarrassed. The airport arrival experience is consistently the poorest of all airports I visit. The departure when luggage check in is needed is disorganised and extraordinarily time consuming. Much worse than any other airport I can remember using. I will not talk about these incidents because they have been eclipsed by coming home from Nice on Sunday last. The flight was already c30minutes late when we landed at "local time" 11.45pm. That , of course is no fault of the airport however what followed was. There was no stand available so we had to wait in our seats for nearly 45 minutes that is until 12.30 am before we were able to start leaving the plane and join a huge queue at Immigration - another 30 minutes - and so even with only carry on it still took over 75 minutes to leave the building and get a taxi. I keep hearing how well Edinburgh is doing. How passenger numbers are up. However , talking with friends and colleagues , who have similar and even worse tales than mine , they use "their " airport with weary resignation and indeed avoid using it if they can reasonably do so. Many like me never fly to London on business anymore. The train works well and a 30 minute delay results in a refund of 50% of the fare. For overseas trips Newcastle airport is a lot more convenient than one might think and often a lot cheaper particularly with a family of five. If I served my clients the way I have been served by Edinburgh airport , I would not have any clients. Quite frankly there is a reliance on a combination of the perception that there is no reasonable alternative and travelling passenger inertia for repeat business. I must say staff always seem courteous if a bit frazzled particularly on check in and try to be helpful. The problems seem systemic and clearly to be to do with organisation and management. I am sorry to be so critical . I would love to be positive but candidly , at best the airport offers an experience to be endured. It was not always like this . It used to be an exciting start to the journey. Paul Renz

It was all a nightmare! Firstly I followed a friend down some stairs hoping to say goodbye to a friend who was going to Amsterdam...we had come from Orkney and were in transit... so we had to go through check in again and then despite sitting by the correct gate we failed to hear the call for the flight to Southampton and missed it... we then had to buy a new flight at an exhorbitant cost. Put me off Wdimburgh airport for life

I was one of the enlucky British Airways customers that had the flight cancelled on May 27th, and got no support from the company, neither from the airport staff. Unfortunatelly my experience could'nt have been worse!

In my last 2 visits (11th March return from Insbruck skiing and 29th May return from Tenerife), the ground support for incoming flights was frankly awful. In March, we waited 50 mins for luggage to hit the carousel (and the private co. in charge of luggage were non-existent (at 10am) and in May, at the end of a 4hrs 35mins flight, we were held for 25 mins on a bus at midnight with no explanation (flight arrived 20 mins late). This customer experience is beyond bad. Thoroughly unpleasant experience

Service after landing was atrocious. Landed at 00:02am and eventually got our cases after very little communication at 01:18am. We travel a lot from Edinburgh and have found it to be the worst airport we have ever been in. Always delays in some department, and always excuses as to why the delays are happening.

Access to the airport is poor, only one road in, single file traffic to get to the drop off point. Check-in conveyor belt not working, so had to check in then move to another area for actual bag drop. Security takes a lot longer than it used to. Flight delayed 45 minutes then had to take a magical mystery tour on a bus to get to the plane. All in all the worst experience at EDI that I've had.

I travelled internationally and i had a lost bag when I flew in to Glasgow. I was told immediately that the bag was supposed to have it meet me in Edinburgh 24 hours later. When I arrived at the airport and my bag wasn't there I tried to speak with many staff about how I could contact the Glasgow airport to get more information, not a single airport employee was willing to truest help out with my situation and everyone tried to pass me on to someone else. Not a good experience at all.

At security the personnel gear you put on the tray to go through the scanner was left to go through whilst we had to queue at another area to go through the human scanner, when we passed that there was dozens of personal stuff that was left for anyone to steal. That is not security at its best, it's a scandal

The airport is totally unprepared for an airline disruption like the one that happened to British Airways on Saturday. Not enough seating, disallowing stranded passengers to rest overnight on restaurant couches results in people on cold concrete floors. No help, no one to make decisions. Sometimes helping people is more important than not applicable helth and safety regulations or liquor licensing rules. Very disappointing experience.

When I handle the boarding pass, I pay the checked baggage fee. When I went to the gate, it took twenty minutes from the plane to take off, but did not let me board the plane. I missed the flight but did not refund the cost of my baggage. The key is, why do I check the check-in time, the counter staff do not tell me the aircraft half an hour ahead of the cabin, and then let me handle baggage? Is this intentionally let me pay? Its Easyjet U2802 in2017.5.25 06:10 edinburgh to London

The wifi service is terrible and the entire process of going through security is painfull. The system is so out of date but I work in Edinburgh so have no choice but to travel through the airport. I have travelled to Glasgow airport every week for 18 months and am now going to go back to glasgow and drive to Edinburgh. i Am from New Zealand and have travelled extensively around the world and Edinburgh is bottom of the list. Wifi is below poor in this day and age Security is nothing less than shambolic I have told my visiting family to fly to Glasgow and i will pick them up

When I arrived three hours prior to my flight, the airport was still shut down from the night. The signage of where to check in for departure is very much lacking on the main level where the airport bus dropped me off, so I ended up upstairs at the departure gates, which were also still locked. I wasted at least 30 minutes there...when they opened, I realized I had to go back downstairs. By this time, the lineups were massive. After finally checking in and getting thru security, I tried to get breakfast and coffee at Cafe Nero, who were still opening up for the morning, even though the airport was full of people. They were really rude and told me to come back in 15 minutes. When I returned in 15 minutes, they told me to come back in 10 minutes. Finally, after wandering the other direction thru the halls, I discovered Costa Coffee, who had been open all the while. Not a pleasant experience on the way out whatsoever! Who wants to leave their holiday like this??!!

No information given in regards to delayed flight and then no further information on having to move to different gates three times. Then on our return journey we had to wait 20 minutes for the pilot to find a spot to dock the plane ... not good

Trying to check in at the Air Lingus desk was incredibly slow, then when I tried to enter the security area the scanner would not accept my electronic or paper copy of my boarding pass. The person on the desk would not hel me and he advised me to go back and have my birding pass reprinted. At the check in desk it was chaos with lots of people that were going to miss their flight one of the staff took 20 minutes to process one family whilst the second staff member left the booking in area I then had to be rude and went to the front of the line to get a reprint of my boarding pass which took around 5 minutes. I then had to run all of the way and delayed at security and just maid the last call for the flight. Not a good start for a holiday!!!
