Even though I live in the Scottish Borders, I no longer use Edinburgh airport. Either Newcastle or sometimes Manchester. The reason? Primarily the brutal rudeness of the airport staff and the appearance that stupidity is viewed as a virtue amongst the staff. Otherwise, read the other reviews and decide for yourself.

I'm shocked and embarrassed by what I encountered at the airport in Edinburgh. I’ve just returned from a holiday with my family of four, including a 4-month-old daughter and a 6-year-old, five suitcases, three backpacks, and a car seat. I’ve never come across paid luggage trolleys at an airport before. Well done, Scotland, well done, Edinburgh. What they say about you being stingy is true, but I didn’t know you were this stingy. Shameful.

I would like to help prepare any international customers flying into Edinburgh airport for a depressing experience. You will arrive into ‘sheds’ with dirty floors and with quite grotesque murals on the walls. You will have to carry your hand luggage up and down several stairs. You will be met by staff some of whom will seem to resent you being there. You will wait endlessly on our luggage coming through on a dirty conveyor belt and in what you may regard as a final insult you will be asked to pay to ‘RENT’ a trolley. Please be assured once clear of the airport things should get better!

Edinburgh Airport is my local airport. In the last decade or so it has expanded somewhat and they have tried to keep up with the expansion of airlines, flights, in & out with the infrastructure but have epically failed each time. I used to be a frequent BA flyer then Easyjet on business and used this airport a lot, it didn't used to be so bad however, it has changed beyond recognition and not for the good. I've had occasion before to comment to the CEO regarding the state of security, or the lack of, too much chatting, un-professional conduct, not paying attention then there's the surly "I've got a uniform on so I'll be as rude as I like " lot. My complaints didn't even rate a reply. Security is all important and needs to be right 100% of the time. I'll start here with this last weekends trip out to France. Friday 4am. Massive queue's to check in baggage, not enough staff, those that were there and certainly the Man who dealt with us was just so miserable, no smile, no chit chat, nothing, a rude and surly Man and I have no idea how he got the job. Then security, OMG. Security at Edinburgh is always, always busy unless you transit through last thing at night. Massive winding queue's, surly miserable staff. A lot of which have never done a customer related job in their lives or have just given up, maybe it's the training? They are there to SERVE not shout and bark out orders like they're trying for a job with the STAZI. Rude doesn't cover it. They have no empathy for those struggling to navigate the ever changing rules and regulations, shoes off, Men only, belt on or off who knows, do this, do that, its a total minefield and changes every time I pass through which thankfully isn't that often these days. I had an eyeballing session with one guy who was obviously p*ssed with his power and the next thing that occurred, guess who was being pulled over for extra attention, me of course, so then this Female takes her time checking my rucksack, doing the bit with the wipes etc etc, my Family looked on and all said it was definitely deliberate. Enough of security as its not likely to ever change especially given the type of people they appear to enjoy recruiting. Time to walk the dreaded yellow brick road through all the so called tax free Booz and what have you, try getting through that in a hurry, its designed to force you to a halt and they want your money, end of. Then into the departure lounge, whoever thought it classed as a lounge was mad, its a bear pit, queue's for everything, even to get into Witherspoons pub, nowhere decent to sit down and which is not a pub related establishment to eat and drink something decent pre flight. I felt sorry for the Family's with their kids, absolutely horrendous and of course, no help anywhere if you need it but plenty of people happy to bark orders at you. We used to use the private lounges but even they're now well over priced with time constraints and your'e restricted to just how much you eat and drink whilst attempting to relax in there. I will remove the top end lounges here as they're not for the general holiday traveller. If you've survived all that then its time to go and queue for your flight and get ready to stand on a flight of steps for ages after being "boarded" or stand in a line on a ramp waiting to board, a fix I believe so airlines and the airports can say we boarded them on time, oh no you did not. Thank God for the sanity of an aircraft cabin (depending on the airline) and some decent service from people with smiles on their faces. I dread our next visit but at least we won't have two teenage Grandkids in tow both wondering what carnage have they been introduced to. Whatever happened to the joy of going to an airport and off on holiday, pleasure's long lost. Adrian/Fife.

As a proud Scotsman, I am embarrassed and ashamed of Edinburgh airport. From arrival Via Roads littered with potholes and faded markings. A long stay car park that’s a shambles With the entrance dug up and abandoned, no shuttle bus anymore, so a walk along an undefined, uncovered, badly lit path, no signs and with no trolleys for baggage. Good luck. The whole airport, Poor organisation, badly run, underfunded, lacking maintenance, disillusioned and fed up staff. Rip off prices at every turn, Traveler’s are simply a target to be exploited, thats what it feels like. I’ve read replies from customer services to other poor reviews, its alway an excuse and never the Airports fault???? Yes it is!!!! Take ownership of the issues, better organisation and planning. Proper leadership from the top for starters. I visit plenty other clean, efficient, well run airports. What’s happened Edinburgh airport????? Terrible, terrible terrible. Embarrassing, embarrassing!!!! I am ashamed. After family discussion, we will now only use Edinburgh Airport as a last resort, why would anyone use this Airport unless they had to. Get a grip Edinburgh Airport.

I travel a lot and whenever I return home I am always dismayed by the reception at Edinburgh Airport. From the convoluted route to International Arrivals to the perpetually understaffed immigration desks, rude staff and the general condition of the fabric of the building, it is all a very poor. For many travellers this is their first impression of our city and country. As a returning Scotsman I am embarrassed. How can so many other countries get it so much better? Then there is the baggage collection. This too is a painfully long process (prepare to be waiting for +1 hour). For an airport that has the audacity to charge £5 to drop-off or pick-up passengers, they are kidding themselves on at where they are in the rankings. Edinburgh Airport is a glorified shed in the middle of nowhere. I seldom use the trams but when I see the cost of a single ticket to the city centre, I feel it is out of line with other European cities and is another stealth tax on travellers. In summary, ill-equipped, grossly understaffed, rude staff, dirty, poor lay out and on top of all of this, over-priced.

If there were 0 stars that would be the rating From passport control, baggage claim and the farcical “taxi” rank where to start. I’m Edinburgh born and based and dread to think what visitors to our City make of this shambolic arrival point. To be quoted in excess of £50 to the city centre by the saloon cars operating from your “rank” is a joke surely. This following on from being herded like cattle at passport control and an hour’s wait in baggage reclaim. I’m seriously considering flying from Glasgow in the hope that it’s an improvement

After arriving from Tenerife (,who were brilliant again) we had to stand outside in the cold in an uncovered walkway to queue to get into Border Control. Thankfully it wasn't raining this time. When we eventually got inside the place was crowded and there were other flights waiting to join the queue. It took 45 minutes get through the process which is unacceptable. The only positive was it took so long to get through, the luggage was waiting on the reclaim belt.

Thank you for your review. Both of our arrivals halls are managed by UK Border Force and we have limited influence in their staffing and processes. I'm sorry to hear of the delay however I would encourage you to contact UKBF directly to raise it with them. Kind regards, Customer Support Team

This airport is a complete disgrace. It has so many issues it would be impossible to list them all. I have used many airports worldwide and this comes close to the worst I have experienced - on a regular basis. No improvements ever seem to happen despite the valid comments which have been made regularly and frequently on line by thousands of travellers. And it serves a capital city!!!

Returned from Marmaris through Istanbul and both airports are absolutely Spotless. When you land at Edinburgh it is filthy and disgusting. What a welcome to Scotland. Huge cleaning effort required but it's been like this for years

I think this is, by far, the worst airport I have ever used. How disabled passengers are meant to use it is beyond me. It's probably best to avoid if at all possible.

The worst airport in the UK. Planes always have to wait for a stand . Steps never ready . No escalator to leave - you have to use steps . Not enough staff on baggage reclaim so you wait for ever. If at all possible avoid flying from here - head to Newcastle . Edinburgh airport is cutting costs ready fir its private equity owners to sell. Embarrassing.

There is no point in listing the countless issues as nothing improves. My best advice now is to AVOID.

Edinburgh airport is a disaster. The check in area was so busy we had to pass through the packed cafe to get to the toilet. The whole building is cramped, dated and dirty. Security is an unpleasant experience with rude and unhelpful staff. Food choice very limited. We travelled to Oslo which was a world apart, although also v busy. Best to replace Edinburgh and Glasgow with one bigger, modern and accessible airport. Be nice to have an airport fit for 21st century.

The whole layout is terrible. Forcing people through duty free should be a crime. No path from carpark to terminal. Single escalator for entire airport to departures. Generally dirty. And terrible wait times and congestion for bag reclaim area.

Edinburgh airport. A complete joke and the other things they don't accept any blame on there terrible customer services blaming the airlines who counter blame the the airport. Absolute joke. I overheard folks saying they had travelled to Edinburgh to save a few quid. But vowed they would never return due to poor service. I complained direct to Edinburgh airport received the usual woody response.

Arrived yesterday on klm flight from Amsterdam. Waited on taxiway for 20 minutes while captain explained that the gate allocated to us still had a plane there. Eventually we were allocated another gate. Another 20 minutes elapsed before we disembarked. Left on a pier then had to descend, go outside then along a strange concrete corridor before entering a partially complete warehouse that constituted passport control. Incompetent staff were opening and shutting lanes randomly thereby letting passengers behind skip past us. Then the real problems started. Baggage collection. In to another partially completed warehouse that would have been worthy of east Berlin 1955. 40 minutes later our baggage arrived. The time from landing to exiting baggage shed was just under 2 hours. Then we popped in to marks and Spencer’s to find the only bread for sale had no wheat in it. Then we went to get a taxi. To save time we went to drop off area hoping to grab a taxi there. As we did so one came in and hit a bollard doing a fair bit of damage to his car. He reluctantly took us explaining that a monopoly has been created by edinburgh airport to prevent Uber and other companies picking up passengers. It really is incredible that scotlands capital city welcomes visitors in to this shambles of an airport

Thank you for your review. The disembarkation and baggage delivery processes are the responsibility of your airline and their contracted handling agent. I'd encourage you to reach out to them as they may be able to provide you with a full response regarding this. Kind regards, Customer Support Team

Airport was OK But getting to and from there is a complete RIP OFF. If you take the tram from Princess Square, just off Princess Street which is very close to Waverley train station it costs £7.50 per person for a single ticket. The journey is 14 stops, however if you travel two stops less to Cogarburn it costs £2.00 per person for a single ticket. I asked a tram supervisor why the massive discrepancy in cost and was informed that the charge was made by the airport. In addition to this the food and drink costs are very high, even for an airport. The final nail in the coffin was the fact that there is a £6.00 supplement added to each taxi ride from the airport. Therefore a £9.75 short, three mile taxi ride then becomes a £15.75 trip. I have travelled to and from this airport on several occasions but this will be my last time. I do not appreciate being exploited and will take my custom elsewhere.

The airport security staff at Edinburgh airport on the morning of 02/04/2023 seem unaware of the correct procedures for passengers with medical devices to comply with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) guidelines. The CAA guidelines detail that medical devices should not be removed and another search method to be offered. As the first female officer did not know what to do with a passenger wearing an insulin pump and CGM sensor and asked her female supervisor for advice who then told me either to remove the medical devices and go through the scanner or wait for a room to become available for a search. I challenged this and was told by the supervisor that this was CAA policy. As I have flown in the last 12 months through Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heathrow, Gatwick, Zurich, Doha, JFK, Puckett, Innsbruck, & Turin airports which all did not require the medical device’s removal and was offered a hand pat down/ hand held metal detector to be used for checking that I complied with the security requirements due to the medical device I wear. These security staff at Edinburgh airport were not adequately trained to ensure compliance with CAA guidelines and to help passengers.

Obnoxious staff at security. Do they have any training in customer service? I doubt it.
